Tapping into old tech: Typewriters make a comeback

In the previous post I mention using typewriters in class instead of computers. In class everyone seemed surprised by that. The story I heard it in is called Tapping into old tech: Typewriters make a comeback and its from the NBC Nightly News. There is also a story in USA Today about how typewriters are making a comeback in general. Some of the points are pretty interesting.

  1. I actually think you're onto something with the typewriters. I tend to be one of those people who really don't want any sort of computerized technology in the classroom. Granted, computers ARE essential for surviving in our world, I don't think anybody denies that. The big however: we lose a deep connection with the "basics" when computers do everything. It doesn't take much to understand how a typewriter works. You have very basic components which most people can fix with minimal thought. Computers, on the other hand, rely on knowing circuits and coding. The more complex the technology, the more we become reliant on things that we don't completely understand.

  2. I love the typewriters, too. I love the idea of being connected to the past in a tangible way. I'm with David ^^ in that I'm apprehensive about having too much technology in the classroom. I made sure to include pencil and papers in my "ideal" drawing since they are important to me and, I think, important to the process of reading and writing. I'm excited to see how our ideas about ideal classrooms transform throughout the year.
